how do u play multiplayer with mods

everytime i go to the multiplayer menu it asks me to update the game and wont let me host or join a server.

In multiplayer mode you can't play with mods as far as I know.

Actually, you can. When the multiplayer still paid (till 2.6 I guess), most of players in servers were using mod lol
